Urgent Information – School re-opening from Monday 23 November

Please find below an important announcement from our Principal Mr John Foley, in relation to St Michael’s College re-opening from Monday 23 November. Information will be communicated here, via email and our social media platforms.

Friday 20 November – 2:40 pm

Dear St Michael’s College Community

I acknowledge and thank our families for your ongoing support, trust and partnership. This was very evident, necessary and appreciated following Wednesday’s announcements.  Thank you also to the students for their positive manner and willingness to work together with staff and other students in such a short timeframe. The calm and professional approach of our staff on Wednesday afternoon was instrumental in providing a sense of confidence and security for our students at a very uncertain time.

It’s fair to say that this communication is now somewhat different from what was previously planned, considering the Premier’s press conference at 11.40am this morning.

St Michael’s staff were preparing to provide remote learning for R-9 students for Monday and Tuesday. The theme around this was very much about maintaining connections and providing for learning continuity and the wellbeing of our students. We are well aware that during times of great uncertainty, some common principles apply for those of us in education, regardless of our role, and include an ongoing focus on: Safety, security, and belonging; Relationship building at the heart of student learning; Communication and transparency around decision-making; and Equity.

As many of you would now be aware, it has just been announced at the Premier’s press conference that South Australian schools will be re-opening from Monday. This will include St Michael’s College. I, like you am just hearing this information for the first time, but it essentially means that St Michael’s College will be conducting face to face classes for Reception to Year 9 students from Monday 23 November as per normal.

There are some specific details (e.g. Year 10 and 11 exams, event updates, health and hygiene clarification) to be finalised through meetings this afternoon, and we will forward additional information as able.

Thank you again for your ongoing support, understanding and flexibility.

Wednesday 18 November – 3:21 pm

Dear SMC Community,

As you are aware the Premier has announced a statewide lockdown in South Australia for the next 6 days.

For the rest of this week – Thursday 19 and Friday 20 November 2020 – in line with other South Australian schools, St Michael’s College will be closed, except for care of the children of essential workers. We will have a small number of staff at both campuses to provide this supervised care.

It would be appreciated if families requiring this service at the Primary Campus could advise the College on primaryadmin@smc.sa.edu.au by 8.00 am tomorrow morning, Thursday 19 November. Please provide your son’s full name(s), class ID(s) and dates required to attend school.

If your child/ren (Primary only) requires care beyond 3.30pm, please ensure they are registered with Extend, our out of school care provider, click here to access the Extend website.

If you require supervised care at the Secondary Campus, please email pa@smc.sa.edu.au with your child’s full name(s) and the dates required to attend school.

If as an essential worker, your child will be present on either of these days please bring them to the front office at their respective campus, so that we can register their attendance.

As required, St Michael’s will remain closed in the week commencing 23 November, again except for the care of children of essential workers. Students have been asked to bring home all the materials and equipment that could assist them with their learning. We will provide more detail in relation to the remainder of the school year in coming days.

Again, thank you for your understanding as we navigate these new requirements together. We will keep communication flowing as and when able.

I genuinely acknowledge and appreciate the support and partnership of the St Michael’s College community.

Kind regards

John Foley

We, like you, are only hearing of this information now, and are awaiting more detail.  Be assured, we shall provide further information to you as it becomes available, particularly as it relates to our College community.
