From the Deputy Principal – Primary

Dear St Michael’s College Community,

Building Works Stage 1 Update

As you pass by the Primary Campus, you will notice a vast difference to the frontage of the buildings and the overall landscape of the school.  Whilst the completion of the building works is still a few weeks away, the staff and students are very pleased to see the transformation thus far, and the disruption to classes and visitors has been minimal.  Tiling, paving, and landscaping continues across various parts of the school, and our additional Nature Play area is really taking shape too and we are glad that the logs from the old gum trees have been repurposed.

The end to the building program is on schedule with handover expected at the end of Term 3, allowing for teaching and learning to begin in the new spaces in Term 4.

2022 Enrolment Intake

The Primary Leadership Team will be meeting with 2022 enrolling students and their families in September. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions we were unable to undertake formal interviews.  Our Reception classes for 2022 Term 1 are now full, however we are placing interested families on our wait list. We look forward to meeting our new families.

Curriculum Planning Meetings – Semester 2

Each semester Primary Teaching Teams are released for curriculum planning. The purpose and priorities for this planning is for teachers to work collaboratively throughout the day to:

  • Design and implement learning and teaching programs using knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements.
  • Evaluate personal teaching and learning programs using evidence, including feedback from students and student assessment data, to inform planning.
  • Develop, select and use informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies to assess student learning.

Teams also reflect and record their achievements and innovations from the previous semester, work through specific goals, compile a list for future planning, and provide and receive written feedback. The College is very supportive of these planning days which are very productive.  Semester 2 Curriculum Planning Days will be undertaken during Weeks 4 to 8 this term.

Cooking Program – Term 3

Our cooking program commenced Friday, Week 2 and we were very thankful to see the return of our valued volunteers and the support of Pastoral Support Worker, Sr Nithya.  The Year 3s would like to acknowledge Sister for her assistance and commitment to the program and for her Naan Bread recipe which is delicious!  Sister expresses her appreciation of being invited into this wonderful program as a regular support, and it provides her with an opportunity to strengthen her relationships with the students and parents.

Languages Assistant – Italian

Through funding from the Italian Government, the Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia, not-for-profit organisation, we have been given the opportunity to host an Italian Language Assistant, Signora Sara Foschini in Term 3 and possibly Term 4 2020, working one day a week with Signora Saraceno.

The organisation promotes Italian language and cultural activities all over the world and its Italian Language Assistants Program aims to:

  • Enrich Italian language programs in South Australian schools through the provision of language assistants who are native speakers of Italian.
  • Provide teachers and students of Italian the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of contemporary Italy, its languages and cultures.
  • Promote language learning and deepen intercultural understanding.

We welcome Sara to the Primary Campus.

Thank you to Mr Ashley Morrison, ICT Manager and his IT support team for live-streaming the recent Academic Awards and New Student Welcome Assembly for us.  We hope you and your family were able to enjoy the event in real time or viewed it at a later date.

Kind regards,

Damian Patton
