It was an exciting weekend for three of our St Michael’s College community members who were awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) and recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List. Congratulations to:
Brian Gilbertson – Old scholar, Class of 1972
Brian was awarded for his significant service to festivals and events in South Australia, to opera, and to voice education. Brian has been the Events Manager and Creative Director of the South Australian Christmas Pageant since 2002, and is also a very accomplished musician, earlier this year Brian presented the inaugural ‘Brian Gilbertson Co-Curricular Music Award’ at our Secondary Campus Academic Assembly.
Kym Meers – Kym’s daughter Asha is currently in Year 9 and her husband Jarrod Meers is an old scholar (Class of 1992)
Kym was awarded for her service to the community through charitable initiatives. Kym has been volunteering for the Epilepsy Association since 2012, she organises the annual ‘Purple Day’ for International Epilepsy Day and is the founded Izla’s Purple Crusade in 2012, raising thousands of dollars for the cause. John Mula – Deputy Director at CESA
John was awarded for his outstanding contribution to Catholic education. John has been the Executive Director of two Catholic dioceses in Australia, including most recently in Tasmania, where he was instrumental in establishing the Archbishop’s Charter for Catholic schools. He has also served as Deputy Chair of the National Catholic Education Commission. John is well known for placing the needs of children and young people first. He has a deep consideration for children from low socio-economic backgrounds and continues to be committed to ensuring the accessibility of Catholic schools.
