Careers and VET Services

We remind students to ensure they have completed all aspects of their SATAC applications. Some students need to upload their Teaching Capabilities Statement by 1 December, some have yet to pay their SATAC fee, and others can see on the welcome page that their Certificate 3 certificate/transcript may need to be submitted or students who are eligible for equity bonus points may need to have uploaded evidence. Unfortunately, at our end there is much we are not privy to, so we cannot remind students of all required information. If in doubt, please send Ms Coorey or Mr Vizaniaris an email. At the end of Week 7, all Year 12 students will be emailed a very comprehensive Final Careers newsletter with all results and end of year transition information. It will be sent to both their College email account (possibly the last time we will use that as a means of communication), and also to the account students supplied in the destination survey earlier this term. Please note, it is very important students email us if their email or mobile phone number changes so that this can be updated for future communication.

The 10th Australian Space Forum, which was originally going to be held Monday 23 November will now occur online on Wednesday 25 November. Please click here to register your details. You will then receive information and access to the free event app where you can watch the forum held here in Adelaide.

Every year St Michael’s College students participate in The Smith Family ‘Student2Student Reading’ mentoring program. Ms Coorey has visited all Year 9 classes and many students have already begun the application process, and we are keen to get as many students as we can on board. Students must be able to commit to two 20 minute blocks per week to listen to their assigned reading buddy. This is coordinated through a website called ‘Chatty Kids’ and occurs after school hours. Student need to commit to this for the assigned 16 week period, excluding school holidays. Reading mentors are trained and can be assured that there are protocols in place to respect privacy and confidentiality. The reading buddies are identified by staff at other schools and are typically students three years younger than their assigned mentor and tracking on average up to three years reading age below other students in their class.

The application process is quite complicated as the first requirement is to obtain a Working with Children check which can take up to six weeks, hence the long lead in with expression of interest due this coming week. Parent/caregivers and students are encouraged to email Ms Coorey with any questions regarding this program.

All VET interviews for 2021 have now been completed and information and enrolments forms have been distributed to students. Please ensure that the enrolment forms have been returned to Mrs Tidd to secure a place in the courses. Students will be notified of their day and time by the Registered Training Organisations early in the new year.
